The first step in the process of valuing a gemstone or piece of jewellery is establishing exactly what it is.
Gemmological testing involves observation of the surface and internal characteristics of a gem material along with other non-destructive optical and physical tests.
We offer Identifications of polished and cut gemstones, either loose or set in jewellery. We also safely identify precious metals using our XRF testing machine.
Our identification reports start at $50- for a metal or gemstone identification, or $70- for both.
If you have lost, stolen or damaged jewellery and/or watches your first step will be to contact your insurance company and lodge a claim. At the same time, you can send them the copies of your valuations for your lost items. If you need copies of your previous valuations contact us. Your insurance company will then organise after loss valuations to obtain the current value of your items. It is important that you keep your jewellery valuations up to date and that you specify the items that you need to on your insurance policy. We recommend reviewing your valuations every 3 years and having your claws and clasps checked on your jewellery annually.
If you have a problematic jewellery claim that needs an independent second opinion, we can help. Please contact us with copies of all relevant communications, documentation, photos, etc to do with the claim along with a summary of what the problem is.
We will review and let you know if our report would be worth your while paying for.
If you are a Jeweller who would like to offer a professional independent valuation service to your customers, or who could use ethical independent documentation to help sell your stock, contact us
As a Jeweller, your mission is to make and sell Jewellery that your customers want to buy. To provide the quality and service that your customers expect and be seen as trustworthy and ethical in all your business dealings. This is where GemLab can help you achieve your goals. We are proud that our Diamond Reports and Jewellery Valuations regarded as the most ethical, the most accurate, and the most independent in New Zealand.
We do not buy or sell diamonds or jewellery. GemLab is the only valuation company in New Zealand that explicitly prohibits trading in its employment agreements.
We will not provide misleading pre-rendered "insurance" type valuations on stock items to your competitors.
If you have existing GemLab valuations, in your name and that are less than 10 years old, in most cases we can update the reports without needing to re-examine the items.
Please contact us with the GemLab reference numbers, photos of the items, and the reason you need the update – insurance cover, insurance claim, selling, legal, etc.
If you require copies of misplaced valuations, please contact us with your name, address at the time of valuation and a brief description of the items.
We will reply with confirmation and a quote.
Alternatively, if you have jewellery and/or watch items that need to come to us for valuing you can contact us to find your nearest jeweller that will arrange a GemLab valuation for you.
